Dancing Group

The Agia Napa Dance Society was created in 1994. It has 160 members, aged 4 – 45, most of whom are residents of the municipality. It was set up for two reasons: firstly, it aims to familiarise people with our culture and customs through traditional song and dance and, secondly, it provides a healthy and creative pastime for young people. Dance helps to cultivate young people in many ways and open new horizons for them, as it is not just an art but a way of life.

The Agia Napa Dance Society has enjoyed a lot of success over the fourteen years of its life, as it started off with just 30 members, while today it boasts 160 members in a municipality which barely has 1800 residents.

Our young people participate with enthusiasm in the various Dance Ensembles of the Society. They have learned to dance both Cypriot and Greek dances and they are always very happy to entertain people whenever they are asked. Above all, they are very proud when they have the opportunity to present the culture of our country before an audience abroad or to the many visitors that come to Cyprus in the summer.

Our Dance Society plays a leading part in the organisation of cultural life of the municipality, taking part in all of our cultural events. The Society has successfully participated in the International Festival of Agia Napa over the years both with the children's ensembles and the adults', presenting a range of Cypriot traditional dances. It marked with success the Closing Ceremony of the 1997, 1998 and 1999 Festivals.

Not only that, but the Dance Society has always made an important contribution to the organisation of events in celebration of Christmas, Easter and Kataklysmos. In such events the Society tries to revive old customs through dance, involving both its younger and older members. The Society has also participated in other festivals, such as the Celebration of Letters (The Three Hierarchs' Day), the Children's Festival and the International Day of Music, when the Society's Ensembles celebrate the occasion with various dances or theatrical performances.

The Ensembles have taken part in various dance events all over Cyprus as well as in International Festivals of Traditional Dance in Greece and Italy (International Dance Festival of Sardinia, 1998). They have also participated in various tourism exhibitions abroad.
